Optimise yourself… You can have it all! Part 1

October 4, 2018

So who feels like they could do a better job of managing their time? Every single one of us…

I love quality time with my nearest & dearest, letting my hair down, great food & wine and going on some sort of holiday 6 times a year — so you could say I’m on a quest to prove (to myself more than anyone else I hasten to add) that you can have it all!

Now ‘having it all’ will mean something different to each of us… and usually compromises of a number of things…

For me it means having a work/life balance, quality time with those I care about, enjoying the work I do, experiencing as much of life and this world as possible, making a difference, funding a fabulous lifestyle, whilst doing sensible things like investing & put savings away so that we have more than just a pension to retire on!

Now going back to the title of this blog, you may be wondering why I chose the word “optimise” instead of “organise”… to be frank when I read the dictionary definition of ‘organise’ I was really, really underwhelmed (don’t do it!), which made me think about the feelings we tend to associate with getting ‘organised’…

Even for someone who loves having everything in order, tends to submit proposals early, is uncomfortable with being late to anything, enjoys thoroughly researching holidays to put ‘just the right’ itinerary together and carries around Tipp-Ex in her handbag… even for me, that word does absolutely nothing get me excited.

Whereas I do get a pretty good feeling from the word ‘optimise’… say it out loud… c’mon admit it… it really is a pretty great sounding verb!

Then when you take a closer look… it really does just have the perfect meaning…

(tr) to take the full advantage of

(tr) to plan or carry out (an economic activity) with maximum efficiency

(intr) to be optimistic

(tr) to write or modify (a computer program) to achieve maximum efficiency in storage capacity, time, cost, etc

(tr) to find the best compromise among several often conflicting requirements, (as in engineering design)

Let’s take a look at the first one…

(tr) to take full advantage of

I’m going to complete that sentence with ‘time’. What are things that could help you take full advantage of the time you have on this planet to fulfill your purpose?

One of my favourite videos on the topic of time, is by Jay Shetty which has done the rounds on the social networks, but one that I have saved, re-watched & shared many times… A great dose of perspective on the subject.

We all have an unknown amount of time on this planet, so it’s time to prioritise what’s important to you, and get on with it! Oh, that sounds simple enough… well yes it is simple, but please don’t confuse ‘simple’ with ‘easy’.

In my next blog, I’ll be going into detail on my take on the next 2 meanings of ‘optimise’…

(tr) to plan or carry out (an economic activity) with maximum efficiency

(intr) to be optimistic

In the meantime, please spend a few moments to work out what your life goals are, ask yourself these questions & make a note of the answers in as much detail as possible

1. What are all the things that give you that feeling of pure & utter joy?

2. What would a day in your ‘ideal life’ look like?

3. Where do you see yourself in a year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, 5 years?

4. Do you have an ultimate goal or purpose that you are passionate about?

5. Why do you want to achieve this? How much does it really mean to you?

6. How can you achieve what you want to achieve?

7. Who/what can help you get there?

8. When can you achieve this by?

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. Dr. Seuss
